Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze.
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears.~ Sheldon Harnick, Zorba
Seagulls seemed oblivious to the last hours of summer trickling away yesterday afternoon. While a few people walked along the shore at Rainbow Haven Beach, some were laid out on blankets, looking to catch the last few rays of summer sunshine. Summer always seems too short, but this one was especially brief.
As my grandson threw pebbles into the waves and we collected shells in the strandlines, it seemed like I had just engaged in the same activities with his father a moment ago. Seasons change and generations pass in the blink of an eye. The natural world carries on.
The sunshine and warm breezes wait for nobody. Sparkling waters and sand can only be enjoyed in the moment. I doubt if anyone who had been on the beach yesterday afternoon regretted having made time in their day for just one more walk on the summer sand.
Beautiful post!
Thank you Nadezhda!
Zorba? I guess I learned something, but for me it will always be Tevye, looking at his daughter under the wedding canopy. But this is important, too–across cultures, across the ages, we all experience this same phenomenon of fleeting time and natural cycles. Thank you again for your thoughts and images.
Pamela, I just added ‘Zorba’ as the name of the musical. I believe the words were sung by Tevye. Yes those natural cycles of the generations, both in nature and in families, are so timeless and cross-cultural. The more things change… the more they stay the same.
Ah, for a moment I felt a little hand in mine . . . 35 years ago. I do not regret one moment I spent with that little boy, just looking at the world. That’s the whole key, isn’t it – making time, being there for the fleeting moments of grace.
Yes Gerry, that does seem to be the whole key. Nothing else seems to open so many doors to the wonders of life.
Gerry said it better than I could…now that I have a granddaughter, it does seem like just yesterday that her momma’s hand was tucked into mine while we explored the world. I regret some of their later years while they were growing up, but never the days that I let the house work, yard work and everything else go just to watch the wonder in their eyes as they discovered the joys around them.
I had forgotten about that song – love it even though it’s bittersweet.
Cindy, the song was played on Seaside FM the other day as I was driving along and it inspired the theme of this post. All of the greatest experiences in life seem to be bittersweet – that they’re ephemeral is probably a huge contributing factor. There’s nothing more enlightening than seeing the world through a child’s eyes.
What beautiful photos today, especially striking! We had that song in our wedding so many years ago. Can’t imagine yet the way you would feel holding a grandchild’s hand…
Kathy, all good things come to those who wait 🙂 What a beautiful song to have had at your wedding.
